Bon voyage, Gary!

Gary CottrellTDLC Director, Gary Cottrell, and his family are on their way to France, where he will be exploring new research avenues during a year-long sabbatical. "I'm visiting my ironically-named friend, Bob French, at the Université de Bourgogne in Dijon." Gary explains, "He has a new technique for learning sequences in neural networks that I plan on investigating. Bob is also interested in developmental issues, so I'm planning to look into whether there's some collaboration we can do. He has done some interesting work on the development of infant visual categorization using autoencoder networks."

Dr. French is Research Director for the Laboratoire d'Etude de l'Apprentissage et du Développement (LEAD) at the French National Center for Scientific Research. LEAD is a cognitive psychology lab whose research activity focuses on changes in information processing mechanisms during development and subsequent to implicit, didactic, or professional learning.
During Gary's sabbatical, which runs from July 2013 through June 2014, Andrea Chiba (TDLC Science Director) will assume the role of Acting Director of TDLC.

For those TDLC participants who will miss regular email exchanges, and attendant list of quotations, with Gary, we offer up a few new quotes that might make his list during a year in France:

Anything may happen in France. – Francois de la Rochefoucauld

Although all new ideas are born in France, they are not readily adopted there. It seems that they must first commence to prosper in a foreign country. – Sarah Bernhardt

Boy, those French. They have a different word for everything. - Steve Martin

Bon chance, Gary!
